Great News for New Zealand's Animals!

July 2010

People who abuse animals face the possibility of much tougher sentencing thanks to this month's passing into law of the Animal Welfare Amendment Act.

The new legislation raises the maximum sentence for willful ill-treatment of an animal from three to five years, whilst doubling fine levels to a possible $100,000 for an individual or $500,000 for a body corporate. The act also creates a new offence of reckless ill-treatment of animals.

Parliament's unanimous backing of the measure owed a great deal to years of advocacy and campaigning by animal welfare organisations, including, pre-eminently, Matter of Fact's long-standing client, the Royal New Zealand SPCA.

Down the years, Matter of Fact has highlighted many individual cases of animal abuse on the SPCA's behalf, whilst consistently arguing the case for tougher sentences.

We're also responsible for introducing the SPCA's annual 'List of Shame', which regularly draws media attention to the worst cases of cruelty towards animals and which has helped sharpen public concern over this issue.

As the SPCA's National Chief Executive, Robyn Kippenberger, points out, the unanimous passing of the new bill reflects the will of all those New Zealanders who want to see our animals cared for in the right way.

"Our animal welfare law is now one of the strongest internationally, as is totally appropriate for a country largely reliant on primary production and, therefore, on its reputation for the humane treatment of animals," Robyn says.

Pop Open the Champagne!

June 2010

There's a saying in America that you can't fight City Hall. But a group of concerned residents from Auckland's rural hinterland has done just that....and won!

For the last five years, Clevedon CARES has been fighting a proposed change to Manukau City Council's District Plan, aimed at allowing more than 270 houses to be built on a canal development near the mouth of the scenic Wairoa River.

This month, the Environment Court rejected the plan change. As a result, the canal project can't go ahead.

Matter of Fact Communications has helped Clevedon CARES keep the issue in the public eye. We've also publicised a range of fundraising concerts, featuring top line artists, such as Don McGlashan and the Topp Twins. We're delighted that Clevedon CARES' efforts have finally achieved success.

As the group's spokesperson, Mary Whitehouse, explains, the plan change had significance beyond the potential impact of the canal development.

"It would have opened the way for further developements, eroding the overall rural character of the Clevedon Valley and placing a huge strain on its infrastructure," she says.

"It's not easy for a community organisation to take on both commercial developers and one of New Zealand's largest territorial authorities. There were those who expected us to role over at an early stage. But, five years down the track, we're still here and we've won!

"We're very grateful to Matter of Fact for helping us keep up the momentum and for presenting our case through the media. We had a very small budget but Matter of Fact managed to do a lot with it," Mary adds.

Here's just a sample of the media coverage Clevedon CARES has received:

Busy New Year

January 2010

Much of New Zealand was on holiday for several weeks over Christmas. Not so, Matter of Fact Communications!

We were back on deck as soon as our Christmas pud was properly digested, telling the media about a surge of calls to Youthline.

Here's some of the coverage we achieved:

A few week's later, we had another significant opportunity to publicise Youthline's work, when the Prime Minister visited the organisation's Auckland centre, as part of its fortieth anniversary celebrations.

Two interesting points to note are:

  • we were able to facilitate the posting of a video clip about the event on the New Zealand Herald's website

  • Fairfax Media added its own video clip alongside a written story on its website

All the signs are that traditional distinctions between print, online and broadcasting media are fast eroding.
